Erotic literature existed long before the invention of the printing press. These novels are a sexy escape from mundane reality. No wonder they’re so popular! The passion is thrilling. However, these stories have faced immense criticism. Most of it is the graphic descriptions of sex.

The Decameron (1353) by Giovanni Boccaccio is one of the oldest surviving forms of erotica. It has been banned for its unconventional descriptions of sex, and even five centuries after its release, the book was hunted down and destroyed in the UK and the US.

With the rise of sexual liberation in the 20th and 21st centuries, erotic the number of romance authors has increased. Although still not considered a critic-favorite, this genre has established a loyal following. The subgenre of contemporary erotic novels is still explicit but with a core of romance.
